Additional Optional Services - AOS

To meet evolving market needs and enhance the user experience, NPC allows Participants and communities of Participants to develop and offer Additional Optional Services (AOS). National or pan-Nordic communities of scheme participants can agree on an AOS that meets the needs of customers in specific geographic areas. These services complement the core NPC payment schemes and are designed to address specific expectations from Payment Service Users.

There are two main types of AOS:

  • PSP-driven AOS – Value-added services offered by individual Payment Service Providers (PSPs) to their customers. These are developed independently and operate within the competitive space.

  • Community-driven AOS – Services developed by groups of PSPs or national communities, such as enhancements to data usage within the ISO 20022 XML standards. While not all community rules are classified as AOS, they may still be published here for transparency.

All AOS must adhere to the following principles:

  • Interoperability and Fair Competition: AOS must not hinder the interoperability of the Scheme or create barriers to competition.
  • Market-Driven Innovation: AOS should be developed in response to market needs. Frequently adopted features may be considered for integration into the core Scheme through NPC’s change management process.
  • Transparency: Community AOS, especially those involving ISO 20022 data elements, must be publicly disclosed in both local languages and English.

Each AOS remains the responsibility of its owner and must align with the applicable NPC Rulebooks and change management cycles.

When an AOS becomes increasingly popular among scheme participants, the NPC may consider including it in the scheme, in line with the principles governing its evolution.

NPC publishes the list of AOS connected to the NPC Schemes, sorted by scheme. NPC is not responsible for the accuracy and exhaustiveness of this list.
